So you’ve managed to break free
from your parents and move out of the family home. Being a fresher will be one
of the most exciting parts of your life but it’s also pretty daunting. You’ll
learn an unbelievable amount of do’s and don’ts in your first year, but to help
you along we’ve come up with a few essentials.
1. Try
something new
Whether it be
joining the Debating society or hanging out with a group completely different
from your friends at home, Uni is the perfect place to give new things a go, so
have an open mind and you might just find you love it!
2. Attend
your seminars
And I’m not just
talking about being a top student. The friends you make in those first weeks will
most likely be the ones you end up hanging out with for the next three years. Having
a few good course mates is going to make 9am lectures on Friday mornings after
a heavy Carver session a lot more bearable, so even though the introductory
meet ups might seem pointless you’ll be grateful in the long run.
3. Join
a society
It’s the perfect
way to meet new people who are into the same things as you, and have a separate
group of friends away from your housemates. There’s a society for practically
every hobby, including tea drinking, so you’re bound to find something you
already do or something you’ve always wanted to try. And if you can’t, why not
set up your own!
4. Don’t
get with any flat mates
I would say that
30% of students you ask have made this newbie error, but believe me when I say
that walking into the kitchen on a Tuesday morning, and getting a sudden flash
back to having a cheeky moment with Bob last night is going to be unbelievably
awkward for the both of you. Flat mate romances can become seriously
complicated, and take it from someone who’s witnessed a lot, they don’t usually
end all that well. Don’t go there.
5. Be
prepared for freshers Flu
The
lectures following freshers week are going to be a “who can cough the loudest” competition.
Make sure you’re stocked up on paracetamol, cold and flu tablets and cough
sweet, because you will get freshers flu and your mum's not going to be there to
nurse you back to health.
6. Dont
get embarrassingly drunk
Know
your limits and don’t learn them in freshers by drinking five too many vodka
cokes, and being shown twenty videos the following day of you dancing on a
table trying to pull off a Beyoncé (we've all been there).
7. Enjoy
yourself!
This is
going to be one the best years of your life so make the most of it. Don’t be
scared to put yourself out there and put your all into everything. Uni is what
you make of it, so make it amazing!
