NEW YEAR: NEW ME?

As the New Year begins, so do the cliched thoughts and tweets of 'New Year: New Me' But how far are some people willing to go? SHU Style reader, Amelia Johnson writes about perhaps one of the most shocking 'New Me' celebs of 2014...

'All I have to say is the word 'Renee' and I am immediately greeted with faces of shock, amusement- or horror. It is the picture that is filling up our Facebook newsfeeds and Instagram's…Renee Zellwegers new face. The big question I ask is, WHY?

Formally loved British icon Bridget Jones is loved by the nation for her frumpy clothes and fat pants; however it now seems she does not quite fit the bill anymore.  Appearing for the first time in a while at the Elle Woman Fashion Awards, Renee caused a bit more of a stir with her 'new look'.  Her cheek bones now lifted, her skin tight, and her hair styled glamorously.  From an alien's point of view she looked like a celeb, she was behaving like a celeb, and she oozed glamour- however we know different.

Personally, I keep finding myself reloading her picture on google, and questioning her change time and time again with frustration. How can somebody feel so strongly about their appearance that they must change it? For your face is your personal identity, it is how people defy you, it is what makes you…you.  Considering the fact that Renee is a popular, hugely admired award winning actress whose face will appear in the majority of peoples DVD collections, I find it saddening what she has done. She is unrecognizable and has masked the beauty we all know her as.

The main backlash from the public has been to humor and mock the situation, however I cannot unfortunately join the bandwagon. I know she isn't Bridget Jones and that is merely a persona she is known for, however there is rumour of a third film coming out, and I just don’t see how Renee can play the part anymore. Although, I don’t see how anybody else can fill the part either. We must though, consider her problems and accept changes as it is her life she is living…however different it now may be in the mirror!'
