So, you’re a student, living the typical student life - spending half your time getting drunk, and half your time feeling hungover! But could you be ready to try something new? Maybe the alcohol fuelled nights are starting to wear thin (… highly doubt it) and let’s be honest, drinking 7 days a week makes your body feel like a carcrash! If you fancy some fun ways of keeping active, or just feel like trying something new, then read on, as there’s more to university life than just the nights out!
Of course, there’s uni work. And the endless series on Netflix that need to be watched… immediately… at any free moment. But one of the best ways to make friends and ensure you make the most of your time at Sheffield Hallam is to join a society or a sport! Being a horrible 3rd year, I’ve experienced my fair share of societies. Can’t say I’ve stuck to all of them, but there are definitely some I would recommend!
1. Cheerleading
I took part in cheerleading for the last two years of uni, and it was only recently I left to explore other things. But if you’re up for a challenge and fancy learning something new, this society is definitely for you! Ranging from a pom squad all the way to a level 3 competitive squad, cheerleading offers a wide range of excitement! And no, its not true you need to put your legs behind your head, or be a crazy good gymnast. You just need to be willing to learn fast and commit yourself to it!
2. Trampolining
This is a sport I have only recently joined this year, and have to say, so far I am loving it! There’s no pressure whatsoever from a commitment or ability point of view, training twice a week for personal achievement entirely! You can take part in a range of competitions, or you can come along for the social aspect and to improve at your own steady pace (and, in my case, just have a gossip and bounce about a bit). It’s also a great way to stay in shape, and jumping works every muscle in your body, especially your core to control your movements carefully!
3. Pole Fitness
Now, I’m very aware of the prejudgments that the name ‘pole dancing’ has attached to it. However, it is quite literally the opposite to what I ever thought it would be! Having a one-off pole dancing lesson last year, I arrived pretty smug thinking ‘how hard is it to swing around a pole, really?’ Well, I couldn’t have actually been more wrong! The amount of hard work it takes to be successful at pole is crazy – it is such a workout! You use every single muscle you own, even the ones you didn’t know you had. It’s definitely one to try if you want to improve your stamina, and try something new.
4. Tea Drinking Society
Now, this is a society I have literally no experience in whatsoever. But I think it sounds like fab society and perfect to chill out with friends after a long day at university! Whoever founded this society is pure genius. Drinking tea, and gossiping. Oh, and there’s biscuits too!! What could be better?!
5. Athletics
Not for the faint hearted, I will admit, but athletics is a completely varied sport which takes training seriously but not too seriously enough to have fun! Having one of my housemates as the girl captain of the athletics club, I hear lots about the stories of their races, and their socials! If I could run in the slightest, I would be down there like a shot. If you’re at all interested in running, whether it be sprinting, middle or long-distance events, field events or cross country running, this is definitely the sport for you to join! However, if, like me, you pass out the minute you start heavy running, there is also a social running club held weekly by the two captains. This is normally held around Endcliffe Park in the evenings and anyone is welcome to go! Great way to stay in shape, and the group run at the pace of the slowest person, so there’s no pressure.
And let's of course not forget...
6. SHU Style!
Having recently joined this society, I’ve already found it’s a great way to meet new people and expand your writing skills! If you are interested in joining our society, please check out or ‘Contact’ tab at the top of the page.
So these are my top 6 societies. However, I am sure my opinion varies to others so go ahead and check out the Sheffield Hallam Union website yourself, and take a look through the long list, and see which one is right for you!
Hope this helps!
